A First Look Into Three New Coffees From One Village Coffee

I love when I get emails about surprise coffee packages heading my way. I love it even more so when they come from great roasters like One Village Coffee. Thanks to head roaster Woodrow Decasere, I had three new coffees to review. These three coffees, India Mysore Chickmagulur, Costa Rica “Pepe”, and Guatemala Chajul were quite fun to test out.
India Mysore Chickmagulur
From having roasted India Mysore Chickmagulur at home, I expected a very nutty coffee with a slight earthiness, but instead I was pleasantly surprised with what I found instead.
The aroma was sweet and fruity with hints of cedar underneath. The cedar note started to develop more as the coffee aged giving you a light, but pleasing woodiness.
Each sip started off with a light acidity, a fruitiness like strawberry, and cedar. The cedar note lingers well into the aftertaste leaving you with an interesting woody taste in your mouth. As the coffee cools, I found notes of spice, nuts, and cocoa starting to come though.
Overall, I found this coffee to be quite enjoyable. I found this coffee best when I winded down a long day. The woody note might scare some people away, but I assure you that its a coffee you’d definitely want to give a chance to.
I’d give this a 4.25 out of 5 cups.
Costa Rica “Pepe”
I can’t say I’ve had much coffee from Costa Rica. The few that I have had have just not been ones that I can say I’ve enjoyed. I’m hoping that my opinions toward Costa Rican coffee will change here.
Costa Rica “Pepe” is noted to be a favorite among the One Village Coffee Crew.
In the aroma I noticed a light fruity note that reminded me of dried fruit, hints of honey, and flowers underneath. The aroma was surprisingly delicious. I think the flowers did it in for me. It was very unexpected.
Upon first sip I noticed a fruitiness that tasted like a mix of dried fruit and citrus, a crisp body, and a lingering chocolate note.
I had trouble further distinguishing the citrus note I found, but overall I am not complaining. This to me is a simple coffee that is overall very juicy with a sweetness at the end.
As the coffee aged into a week old I found it to be more and more enjoyable. This coffee soon became my favorite.
I’d give this a 4.5 out of 5 cups.
Guatemala Chajul
The last coffee I received was Guatemala Chajul which I found to be very delicious. I’ve had quite a few Guatemalan coffees, and what I found in this coffee was a surprise to me.
The aroma started with a big fruity scent, with a sweetness underneath. The fruitiness was quite strong. I couldn’t place the fruitiness though.
The first sip started off with a big juicy body, and before I knew what hit me, a sweetness rolled in that was intense and tasted like I had downed a cup of sugar water. The coffee finished off with hints of cocoa. The intense sweetness was unexpected, but between the juicy body it was a sweet combination.
The sweetness lingers around for what seems like forever. I can’t recall having a coffee with as much sweetness as the coffee carried. I’d love to hear what the crew at One Village Coffee thought of this one.
Overall, I’d give this one a 4.25 out of 5 cups.
I’d like to thank everyone at One Village Coffee for being so generous and sending me these coffees. If you have never tried their coffee you are missing out. Head over to their site and order you up some coffee. Keep an eye out for when these three coffees to go live.
