Aged Sumatra Linton Peaberry ’07 Crop Home Roast Thoughts

  • In my previous post I talked about this aged coffee I got from Sweet Maria’s. Sweet Maria’s has a wonderful selection of green coffee beans for great prices, along with other accessories you may need for home roasting.

Okay, so the overwhelming aroma is getting to me already. I don’t even have the cup under my nose and I’m smelling the mint, cloves, and a dirty armpit. I would refrain from the dirty armpit scent as disgusting as that is, but that’s what I’m smelling. At a close sniff I am getting a very light woodsy smell.

The coffee has some very interesting and odd flavors to it.

I have already tried this coffee. When I roasted the coffee Monday I couldn’t wait to try it and then I realized why the bag said let sit for 2-4 days. So now it’s Wednesday and I am hoping this coffee is a little more mellow in flavor. All I’m saying is the taste of that coffee almost killed me.

Okay, onto the first sip. I am getting an intense flavor again, but a lot more mellow than before, but still intense. I am getting a woodsy flavor coming through with a right in your face peppery note. It feels like I ate something peppery. In the beginning of each sip there’s this intense flavor that causes your face to squint, but I can’t make it out. It goes away in a moment, but it’s like a quick bitterness.

As the coffee cooled a little more I got this musty flavor which I really dislike.

The funniest part about this is the cupping score on Sweet Maria’s was an 87.9. Whoever had this coffee must be tasting something better than me because I just don’t know if I would touch this coffee again after this review.

I’d give this an A+ for effort as this is the first coffee that seemed to have a lot of flavor once roasted.

Even if it didn’t come out tasting that great, still a pretty cool experiment. I’d like to knock off a retro coffee off my todo list at some point.

You need to hurry and hop on that bandwagon and get roasting. :) I would love to see what you come up with. I’ve got some more coffee to roast up so maybe if that turns out alright I’ll send it to you to review for fun.

interesting. do you know something more about the coffee? how aged was it? i

how long do you wait from roasting to cupping/drinking?

I don’t remember if there was any info on how it was aged, but I can look. It said on the bag to let it rest 2-4 days after roasted. I’m assuming that’s the same for drinking/cupping as well.
