Are You A Perfectionist When It Comes To Your Morning Coffee?

  • When you wake up in the morning, eyes still half shut, you are lucky if you can distinguish the coffee pot from a toaster. You are even luckier if you get a decent cup of coffee the first time. For some, the first cup of coffee is a kick starter, and for others it’s more.

While browsing Twitter the other morning I saw a tweet from @jesseraub, a Wholesale Educator for Intelligentsia Coffee who asked:

If you have an off brew, do you ever remake your morning coffee? Waste vs. Taste, Time vs. Sleepiness.

I thought this would make for a great post because it’s something we can all relate to.

So what happens in the morning? Do you wake up and use a drip maker first? Or maybe you head for the good coffee equipment… (i.e. French press, Pour-Over, Espresso)

Whatever coffee equipment you decide to use, what happens when you do make an off brew? Do you find yourself too tired to redo it so you just drink it, or are you the kind of person who will hop back to the kitchen and start over?

For me, I am a big big perfectionist. A few months ago this may not have been the case, but I’ve learned that coffee beans are gold and I have to start treating them like gold.

I wake up in the morning, eyes half shut, but the moment I see my coffee cart with all my beautiful coffee equipment and wonderful coffees to choose from I wake up instantly. Being tired was so 5 minutes ago.

Hell, I can’t even remember the last time I had to redo a cup of coffee. Guess I got mad skillz under my belt.

Not everyone has the time to redo a brew, or even the energy in the morning to redo that first cup, but for those that do, you are a true perfectionist.

QOTD: So are you a perfectionist when it comes to your morning brew? Tell us your story.

    Re-do?!
I can pull espresso in my sleep!
    Well, that’s not true… hah.

At any point in the day, especially if I’m drinking straight espresso, I may re-adjust the grind, temp, etc to get a better shot. Once I have a blend dialled in it’s all auto pilot!

      Showoff! ;)

Yeah, once you adjust the ratios and figure out that perfect shot or cup of coffee it’s easy, but sometimes you might have it down and still screw it up if you aren’t paying attention.

        ALWAYS paying attention to coffee!
I might burn myself on the toaster, but the coffee always rocks! Priorities right? haha

haha very true! Gotta have coffee on the top of the priority list.

Working shifts, so working 2 different coffee-routines as well. Late shift means I can take my time and have me a nice cappa, followed by a double shot, before bringing the kids to school. Nice. Early morning shift means getting up at 4:20 to get on my bike for a 30km, almost 1 hour ride to work. Then have a quick shower and start work at 6:00. So this leaves me about a 20 min slot to: 1. get out of bed, 2. get dressed, 3. have breakfast and 4. COFFEE!
Aeropress used to be my weapon of choice, foolproof routine. Giving the presspot a try, starting next week.
Guess you figured it out by now…no remakes in the morning…

Geez! You get up early… You really are lucky to get a decent cup of coffee in the morning. I think you’ll find the presspot quite easy and simplistic. While you are getting dressed your coffee can be brewing and as long as you have a timer you don’t have to worry about it.

After opening for cafes for a few years, I’ve become a morning person. I’m awake for the most part when I’m making my coffee. I always try to be consistent with my brewing methods.Since I have a list of of grind adn amount for different brewers and coffees. On those “no amount of coffee can wake me up” days, I find myself needing to redo my coffee.

    • http://thecoffeeadventures.com Jamie Ferguson

Interesting. I feel you on having to redoing coffee part. Also, I like the idea of having a list for the different brewing methods. Wonder why I didn’t think of that. ;)

      • http://dailydemitasse.com Daily Demitasse

The lists help not only for consistency, but also so I don’t have to think too much that early.

        • http://thecoffeeadventures.com Jamie Ferguson

Definitely. I’ve been going by memory and sometimes I do forget because I’ll make a single cup one morning and the next like a decanter full.
