Cold Brew Coffee Series: Original Black From Superba Coffee

When I said I was on a cold brew kick, I meant it. This weeks cold brew hails from Superba Coffee. I was very excited to get my hands on some Original Black. I even got a little crazy and ordered two 16oz bottles just in case. Not like I need anymore cold brew in my fridge either.Thoughts
I was excited upon receiving the package that I almost dropped one of the bottles. I put the bottles in the fridge and waited until the next day to crack them open. The next day the cold brew was chilled and ready to drink, or chug. I poured some in a glass and took the first sip…On the nose I could smell definite chocolate. Like a sweet and creamy chocolate. Underneath a lemon-like acidity came bursting out. It worried me a little, but the sweet chocolate play remained quite pronounced giving me hope.
Unfortunately this cold brew falls apart pretty quickly. Let me state really fast that I don’t believe its the coffee or the companies fault for lack of good brewing. The package arrived seven days after the date on the bottle. Cold brew doesn’t tend to hold up very long.
The cold brew wasn’t completely bad. Each sip starts with a nice creamy chocolate sweetness, but there’s a bitter acidity that takes over the cup. Oddly enough, while the glass sat at my desk, ice half melted, I noticed that this cold brew had gotten sweeter. The chocolate play became more intense tasting like a bittersweet dark chocolate. I even found hints of cherries in the cup as well. Somehow sitting around made it taste much better.
We create this concentrate using filtered water, freshly roasted coffee, and a proprietary steeping and filtration methods which takes over 15 hours and several pounds of coffee per gallon. The result is a rich, complex, flavorful cold brew coffee that can be enjoyed chilled, right out of the bottle, but we think it is tastiest when poured over ice or served with cream and sugar. ~ Superba Coffee
Verdict
I cannot begin to explain why the cold brew started to taste better as it sat around while the ice melted, but all I can say is it started to change my feelings toward this cold brew. I think if this cold brew hadn’t arrived seven days after then it would have been a lot tastier. If you plan on ordering please take in account how long it will take to get to you.Even though it arrived late and wasn’t as fresh as it could have been, it still wasn’t bad. I’d still recommend giving this cold brew a try.
