Colibri Azul From Gevalia Coffee Review

  • I’ve been wanting to check out Gevalia coffee for awhile now. It’s one of those coffee companies that have been around for so long you just have to try their coffee.

After much debate, one of the coffees I landed on was this limited edition called Colibri Azul from Nicaragua.

High in the mountains of Jinotega’s cloud-covered rainforest known as El Diablo, the lush emerald foliage nurtures the finest coffee plants. On the small and medium coffee farms of Nicaragua only the ripest red cherries are selected from the highest grown coffees. After milling, the coffee beans are covered with golden honey. The result is this unique, luxurious coffee – the work of craftsmen.

I was curious to see how the coffee tasted with the beans being covered in honey after milling.

The moment UPS arrived, the box was opened and I was already heating up water. After it was all said and done, I had my cup of coffee and was quite excited to try this.

Was it going to have a strong honey taste? Was it going to even taste good?

Questions were running through my head, but as the coffee cooled it was getting closer to those questions being answered.

From the aroma, there was a sweetness with a definite honey note. There are some fruity notes hiding in the background, but the honey seems to dominate the cup.

The first sip was very good. The acidity shot into my mouth, and started dancing around on my tongue. After that, the honey note appeared and really coated my tongue with a luscious honey taste. There is a raisiny like note in the background along with some slight nuttiness.

So far, the coffee is great until the aftertaste. The honey leaves a not that pleasing taste on your tongue, but I am trying not to let that get to me.

Overall, not a bad coffee if you leave out the aftertaste part. I’d give this a 3.5 out of 5 cups. This coffee is still worth checking out.

You can grab yourself some of this for $7.75.

QOTD: Would you consider this a flavored coffee? Why or why not?
