Colombian La Cacica From Allegro Coffee

  • When it comes to coffee, I hardly ever go to Whole Foods or The Fresh Market searching for fresh coffee unless I’ve run out and am desperate. I was desperate this time around.

I was making Coffee Beef Stew and needed some form of fresh coffee to use in the stew, but once again I had no coffee to spare. I ran over to Whole Foods hoping there was some kind of even remotely fresh coffee around.

I picked up the coffee I needed for the stew and then decided to grab some extra for myself. I ended up with Allegro’s Colombian La Cacica, a light roast which:

has notes of cocoa, caramel, and walnut with a lusciously full body.

When I opened the bag and took a big whiff, this very intense aroma struck me. This smelt more like a spice, and it traveled into my throat where it stuck for a good few minutes. From there on I had a good feeling that I picked up some decent coffee.

After brewing, I could smell a sweet caramel note, and dried fruit coming from the cup.

When I took the first sip, I couldn’t detect much acidity, but then it appeared in a mellow fashion. This coffee carries a full luscious body like they had described. It’s delicate tasting with a sweet caramel note taking over the coffee, and a dried fruit note underneath.

At the end, there is a slight nutty note lingering around on my tongue.

Overall, I am taking back my dislike for Whole Foods and those types of markets when it comes to coffee. At least for now. This may not be totally fresh, but it has a lot of flavor and tastes very good.

I am giving this a 3.5 out of 5 cups.

What do you guys think about Whole Foods and other like it? Would you buy coffee from them?

Glad to see that the coffee wasn’t terrible, but I’m guessing the Whole Foods near you doesn’t have a coffee roaster on staff?

I didn’t get a chance to ask. I went on Memorial Day. BIG mistake. Next time I am down there I will find out.

I saw that coffee today when I was in fresh market I think. I was going to buy some decaf because there is a possibility we might need to start making decaf and I have no idea what decaf taste like.

Why do you need to start making decaf? Is it for your customers?

I had decaf once. I found the coffee felt weakened down even though the brew was on the stronger side. Maybe it was because it was a blend.

I’ve had some hit and miss experiences with Whole Food’s coffee. However, overall it has more of an organic/Fair trade selection and has fresher options then the regular grocery stores.

Yeah. You just have to really look at the dates on the bags. Sometimes I am able to even grab coffee that they put in the big barrels because they are only a few days old, but then again it may taste like crap too.

I like how Whole Foods especially has a large selection of organic/Fair trade coffees. Glad to know they are doing something good.
