Cooking With Coffee: Burgers

  • I am not sure why I didn’t jump on coffee burgers sooner, but it’s better to be late than never right? I decided for this round of Cooking With Coffee I would create my own list of ingredients for these burgers. I wanted to experiment to see what I could come up with.

Let’s say that I found it a lot harder to come up with an ingredient list to use for the burgers. There are endless possibilites with burgers, and I mean endless.

I’ve been experimenting for a couple weeks now and have gone through a few rounds of burgers to find out that all the burgers I made were okay, but they didn’t carry that WOW experience I was looking for.

After a few burgers in, I was desperate. I was at the grocery store and I came across Grill Mates Applewood Rub so I picked it up to try. I was unsure about mixing an applewood rub with coffee and sticking it on a burger, but the moment I took that first bite I was eating my own words.

    Ingredients

    - Burger meat of your choice
    - Grill Mates Applewood Rub
    - Coffee (Peet’s French Roast)

    Directions

    - Take burger meat and make patties
    - Take burger and place them on a plate
    - Cover burgers in strong *brewed* coffee
    - Flip burgers every so often, but be careful not to let them break apart
    - Take burgers and generously coat them with Grill Mates Applewood Rub
    - Cook until ready
    - Enjoy!

    Thoughts

While making the burgers, the applewood rub filled the kitchen with a pleasing smell. I was starting to think that maybe this applewood rub wouldn’t be so bad after all.

After the burgers were done cooking I prepped my burger for consumption, and took the first bite. Holy crap! I had to take a few more bites, and then a few more.

I noticed quickly that the coffee was not as strong as I initially would have liked, but I realized later on that it carried the perfect amount of coffee flavor.

Alongside the coffee flavor, the applewood rub adds a pleasing sweetness, and woody hints giving these burgers a nice balance. Definitely heaven in my mouth.

I must say that I am just loving this applewood rub. It probably is hands down the best ingredient I have ever added to a burger.

These burgers are so good that before you know it, you’ve scarfed down one burger and are frantically searching for seconds, and most likely third’s.

My all time favorite cooking with coffee recipe is my coffee beef stew, but after making these burgers, coffee beef stew needs to be worried. I might just bump this recipe up to my absolute favorite.

For some, I’m sure that eating a burger that has coffee in it isn’t on the top of your list of things to eat, but this is a recipe you just have to give a chance.

    Holy Yum!!!

    I am so hungry now… curse you…

Reminded me of my own favorite ‘cooking with coffee’ aptly named “The BEST Chili You Will Ever Taste” – http://www.food.com/recipe/the-best-chili-you-will-ever-taste-73166

I have worked with this recipe for over 5 years now, and have made my own slight changes.  I now marinate the steak overnight in a bottle of dark beer. I caramelize the onions so they are really dark and sweet.  I add the first two can of beans and simmer for an hour, then take off heat and refrigerate overnight.  Next day, heat up VERY SLOWLY and add a third can of beans, again simmer for an hour, take off heat and refrigerate.  Third day I do it again with the final and forth can of beans… letting this mix marinate for three days makes it all worthwhile.  Oh, i also use two bottle of dark beer, stout or porter is good too.

This is simply the best comfort food found on the planet.  Have it with rice, mashed potatoes, on toast, by itself…  The recipe makes a HUGE pot, but it freezes well, and is the perfect heat up in a hurry meal!

Give it a try Jamie, honestly, you won’t regret it!

Now I am cursing you…hehe ;) This sound amazing, but I don’t know about having to wait 3 days to eat it.

It’s funny you talk about coffee and chili. I’ve been wanting to do a coffee chili so bad, but I haven’t found a recipe I liked. I’m very picky about my chili.

I’ll try and find some time to make this soon. Thanks!
