Does Good Flavored Coffee Exist?

  • Java Dawg Coffee

I know you’re all thinking I am crazy for even talking about flavored coffee. I am crazy. Flavored coffee is a grim reaper in disguise. Today I am calling out the grim reaper.

I believe good flavored coffee exists only if good beans are used. Without the right beans you can flavor all the coffee you want but the outcome will always be bad. So does good flavored coffee exist? I’d like to think so.

The other day I was grabbing my weekly dose of Java Dawg Coffee when I decided to try a flavored coffee that they offer which has been hounding me for as long as I can remember.

Java Dawg is one of the very very few local coffee shops here in Sarasota. Located at 4615 S. Tamiami Trail Sarasota, FL 34231, it should come as no surprise that this is my favorite coffee shop around.

I decided on Kona Macadamia which is a flavored coffee that carries:

A buttery, nutty coffee with a taste of the Islands.

While this was brewing I definitely felt like I was on an island. A sweet buttery, amaretto, and nuttiness filled the kitchen and the whole house with a gorgeous aroma. While I was enjoying the aroma I was hoping the taste would be the same.

Upon first sip I realized there was no bitterness whatsoever. A lot of the time…Almost all the time you will find a bitterness when it comes to flavored coffees but it wasn’t in this cup. Instead, a sweet buttery note coated my tongue and before I knew it a wave of amaretto and nuttiness rushed in.

I think it would be safe to say that I had a good flavored coffee on my hand.

There is a slight aftertaste that could be a chemical taste from the flavors being added but all in all this coffee is still quite good. I think for people who use creamer in their coffee will most likely not notice this aftertaste but for us black coffee drinkers it’s there.

Overall, I’d give this a 3.5 out of 5 cups.

Kona Macadamia will run you $8.00 for a 12oz bag.
