Frankenblend From Dean’s Beans Coffee Review

I really love when companies offer to let you make your own blend and they’ll roast it up. I landed on creating a concoction of beans from Dean’s Beans. Thanks guys for letting me create probably the most awful sounding blend (bean choice wise), and possibly worst tasting blend ever. Just kidding.I called it Frankenblend. The name says it all. After all, tomorrow is Halloween.
Frankenblend is a mix of 33% Ethiopia, 33% Nicaragua, and 33% Timor beans. All of which happened to be dark roasted.
It wasn’t my intention to create a dark roast. I was going for more of a medium-dark blend, but that’s okay.
When I opened the bag, I was so unsure of this ever tasting even remotely decent, but I knew I had to not let myself jump ahead until I’ve actually tasted the coffee. The beans carried a strong smokiness and underneath were hints of spice and a fruitiness.
Once brewed, I noticed the aroma was definitely smoky, but oddly a quite pleasing smokiness. There’s some sweetness and spice coming at me as well.
The first sip is a combination of spice and smokiness. It doesn’t sound bad, but the smokiness at times is a little heavy. I notice some sweetness coming through as the coffee cools, as well as some possible fruity notes.
I’m sure I could have created worse of a blend too. Overall, this really was not that bad. I think this would be even better taking the roast level down a touch and lighting it up a bit.
Since this is a custom blend, I will not be rating this.
