Kona Blend Java From Monster. Is There Really Kona Coffee In This?

  • Sometimes I wonder why I keep buying canned coffee drinks like this and putting myself through hell. As I am writing this I am already drinking this drink, and well… You’re going to have to keep reading.

This drink in particular caught my eye not for the previous canned coffee and energy Monster has done (those are all gross by the way), but because one word on the can stuck out like a sore thumb. Kona? There was no way they were using Kona coffee in this drink. Where they?

The side of the can reads:

Everyone knows some of the best coffee on the planet comes from the Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii. No need to trek the slopes of Mauna Loa braddah since we already got some of Pele’s thunder and put it in a can. Select Kona beans combined with premium imported coffee, supercharged with our proven energy blend makes for an unbeatable combination.

Okay, so myth debunked. The whole “select Kona beans” and “combined with premium imported coffee” tells me that there isn’t enough Kona coffee to notice a taste difference. Also, who knows if they are actually using true Kona beans and not slapping that on the label for marketing hype.

I don’t normally like to subject you guys to reviews of canned coffee, but I found this one to be a little interesting.

And now the burning question, what the hell does this Kona Blend from Monster taste like?

When I opened the canned I was greeted with a familiar scent. No, not burnt coffee surprisingly, but coffee liqueur oddly enough. I’ve been using Starbucks coffee liqueur for cooking lately, and this drink smells exactly like it. I have yet to find one trace of burnt coffee in the aroma.

After taking my first sip, the first thing I noticed was a coffee liqueur like taste which made me check that this isn’t like an alcoholic beverage. Sorry, folks. After the coffee liqueur there is a slight overly sweetness that soaks into your tongue, but doesn’t stay around long. Instead you are left with a pretty clean aftertaste.

This Monster definitely has just a little too much sweetness in it, but I am finding myself being able to get past that because its becoming quite addicting. At this point, half the can is already gone.

Either Monster got the hint about how bad their previous canned coffee drinks are and have finally figured out how to make a decent coffee drink or they were seriously holding out.

I would have to give this a 3.75 out of 5 cups even though they could cut down on the sweetness a bit. I could definitely handle drinking this when I am out on the go or if I ever have a lazy moment where I don’t want to make coffee. (That will never happen.)

Hopefully you guys will find this in your area, give it a try and write back on your thoughts.

Just got back from Bali where I tried freshly fire roasted Kopi Luwak coffee… I think the tangy qualities of Kopi Luwak would be much better suited to this type of energy than Kona…  But then who would pay $9 for a can of Kopi Luwak Monster drink right???

    So are you hooked now?

Kopi Luwak is an interesting coffee, but I hate how it has become so popular that we’ve had to capture the animals and cage them just to keep up with the demand.

I’m not hooked on the new drink from Monster, but I am kind of craving it now. :) I mean, it did taste like coffee liqueur.
