Legendee Gold Coffee From Trung Ngyuen Review

  • Any coffee drinker out there has more than likely heard of Kopi Luwak, or as most call it, shit coffee. I’m not here to promote the coffee. It doesn’t deserve the attention, but I will promote an “alternative.”

Kopi Luwak is known for the smoothness and very chocolate body the coffee holds. Legendee Gold from Trung Ngyuen is supposed to taste like Kopi Luwak, but for a fraction of the price.

One of the world’s most famous coffees, the Legendee is a unique enzymatically-treated coffee that releases flavors bound in the beans and not released under ordinary processing. The Legendee product is largely regarded as the world’s most successful attempt to produce a coffee with the balance and flavor of the famous Kopi Luwak, or Civet/Weasel coffee. Trung Nguyen worked hard on achieving a new balance of Arabica and Excelsa beans in this formula.

The coffee only comes ground up, but it does come in a double-foiled vacuum pack bag which was quite impressive. I had tried emailing the company to get whole bean, but they wouldn’t offer it to me.

This is a Vietnamese coffee that is rich and full of flavor. I read the directions for brewing and was surprised to read that they suggest using half of what you would normally use for a cup of coffee.

Upon opening the bag, I was in a bit of shock. There was life to the coffee. A slightly odd, but chocolaty aroma filled the air. I say odd because it’s not the chocolaty aroma you might think of.

I ignored the directions and used four scoops of grounds for two cups of coffee in my Chemex. I quickly realized why they said half. The coffee that poured through was black as night. You couldn’t see through it at all.

Upon tasting, I was greeted with this intense sweet chocolaty aroma. Again, I noticed that it had an odd taste, but still very good. There’s a weird lingering aftertaste that hangs around on your tongue. It’s not bad, but still not great.

I am guessing this has something to do with the way the coffee is enzyme treated to mimic Kopi Luwak, but overall, the coffee exceeded most of my expectations for it. If you are searching for a chocolaty coffee than this is for you. Hot or cold, this coffee does the job.

I’d give this coffee a 3.5 out of 5 cups.

You can grab 9oz of this for $16.95. A bit on the expensive side, but it’s worth a try.
