Launching sometime Feb. 2013, Nerds Coffee is the newest contender to the long, and ultimately fast growing list of coffee subscription services. Let’s get to the point here… What makes Nerds Coffee stand out from companies like Craft Coffee, LA Coffee Club, or even Tonx?
The idea behind Nerds Coffee is actually pretty cool. Each month’s box will feature (4) 100g packages of coffee, but with a twist. Each bag will be labeled 1-4. The idea behind the labeling is to let you decipher the coffees such as aroma and notes without having any preconceived thoughts and then once finished you (the subscriber) are able to go onto the website and figure out from your notes what each number on the bag corresponds to what roaster on the website.
On top of that, each numbered bag will also have its own Twitter handle (ie @NerdsCoffee1, @NerdsCoffee2) as well so there will be a nice social aspect to this subscription service. All coffee folks can correspond with other subscribers to share brewing recipes as well as communicate about the current months coffee box.
Each month’s box will have four roasters in it. The four roasters for the box will be chosen through blind cupping. Each box will carry 100g of each roaster’s coffee totaling in 400g of coffee each month. No word on pricing yet.
I believe Nerd’s Coffee has a solid approach to their subscription box and also gives you a fun way to approach coffee. With the non-labeled bags, there is no way to favor a coffee by knowing what roaster it is before hand or any notes of any kind. I’m excited to see how the Twitter interaction will unfold.
Can’t say that it doesn’t stand out from the rest because it does. I’m really rooting for these guys! I hope that once pricing and such goes live and we are able to order you will do so and give this subscription service a try.
