Review: Burundi Washed Gahahe From The People’s Roast

  • The People's Roast

About a week ago I was contacted by Tom Anderson from The People’s Roast asking if he could send me some coffee samples to try. I had been interested in checking out their coffee for a few weeks now. Now that the opportunity was sitting in front of me I could not pass it up.

The People’s Roast is a microroastery as well as a resource for home roasters. You can shop for fresh roasted coffee, green beans, as well as find helpful information for all your home roasting adventures.

I was excited to check out the coffee and see what it had to offer. I was sent two coffees, but the first one I will be talking about is the Burundi Washed Gahahe which is said to have

deep red fruit notes, creamy body, and very pleasant acidity.

Upon brewing I could detect wine like notes with a fruitiness that I couldn’t seem to place. I was instantly drawn into this coffee, and I couldn’t wait to dig deeper to see what else this coffee held.

The aroma coming from the cup was juicy with a sweet fruitiness like dates that just pulls you in. Underneath, a wine like play starts to emerge. The aroma becomes delicate and sweet, and it just carries you away.

The first sip opened with a juiciness, dates, and a nice acidity creating a pleasing welcome to my palate. Soon after, hints of spice came to play, and a sweetness started to linger after each sip. As the coffee started to cool I even noticed hints of chocolate coming through.

I wasn’t sure in the beginning how this coffee would taste or if it even had any life in it. The coffee arrived one week after roast date. In the end Burundi Washed Gahahe was a pleasant surprise. This coffee had more life in it than I would have expected for a week old coffee, and it didn’t even last long in my kitchen.

This is a wonderful coffee that I feel any palate would like.

I’d give this a 4.25 out of 5 cups. You can try this coffee or others here.

I just bought a pound of the roasted coffee from The People’s Roast, and got it the day after roasting. It’s amazing how different coffee can taste when you get it right after roasting. I really enjoyed their roast!

Nice! I’m sure the coffee would have come faster if it wasn’t shipped through USPS, but it was still good nonetheless. Some coffees don’t taste good a day after roasting, and some shine immediately. Glad you are enjoying the coffee as well.

Jamie, What do you find are the best shipping methods for shipping coffee quickly to ensure freshness?

        • http://thecoffeeadventures.com Jamie Ferguson

Most companies ship UPS which can deliver anywhere from 3-10 days depending on location, but that it the same with USPS Priority Mail too. The only thing I can suggest is offering various UPS methods like priority, 3 day ship, and overnight shipping with the various prices. At least then customers can decide and its a win win for both you and the customer. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info.  USPS Priority mail advertises 1 -3 days which is why I decided to go with the flat rate envelopes.  The feedback I’ve been getting is that the packages are not arriving in 1-3 days (more like 4-6).

No problem. I would suggest talking with the post office and make sure you aren’t paying for priority and getting the basic. Sounds like they are ripping you off, or they are having some serious mailing issues.
