Review: Cherry Chapstick Espresso From De La Paz

  • Cherry Chapstick from De La Paz

When it comes to Twitter users, its not just about reading other peoples tweets of 140 characters or less, but the conversations that ensue, the recommendations of products, beverages, and other things. Twitter has exceeded a lot of peoples expectations other than just “What are you doing?”

One twitter user, @iamnotpretendin recommended awhile back that I try an espresso blend from De La Paz Coffee Roasters called Cherry Chapstick Espresso. I told him I’d add it to my list, but unfortunately it fell to the bottom. It wasn’t until recently that I remembered and placed an order.

This espresso blend got my attention not just from the name, Cherry Chapstick, but also the notes in the coffee as well.

Cherry Chapstick Espresso is a mixture of 75% washed Bourbon from Finca La Reforma and 25% washed heirloom Sidama from Moredocofe.

In the cup you can expect a candy shell aroma which sets the tone for the very sweet black cherry upfront acidity; reminiscent of a Cherry Cordial. Behind the sweetness you will find a creamy mouthfeel with mid notes of lemon grass and citrus blossom, which follows through into a finish of refined almond butter.

I tried this coffee both in the French press as well as an espresso shot to see what this blend had to offer.

In the French press, it was an unbelievable taste. The aroma carried a sweet candy, cherry like aroma. It smelt exactly like those chocolate covered cherries. The aroma also carried hints of a butteriness.

The first sip started off with a sweet like candy note, and then a wave of citrus hit my tongue. After that, a cherry note sprung out from the cup. As the coffee cools, hints of nuttiness, lemon, and a sweet butteriness appear.

Sure, all that made this coffee unforgettable in the French press, but there was one note in the coffee that had me scratching my head. A note sprung up from the cup as it cooled down. It reminded me of lavender, but I couldn’t be sure. It was the most interesting note in the cup.

Even as an espresso shot it was unbelievable. The shot was not as bright as I was expecting which came as a big surprise. I assumed it would be very sweet and very bright, but it carried a sweet candy like note, hints of lemon, tartness, and cherry.

Overall, Cherry Chapstick was amazing in both the French press and as an espresso shot. Give this blend a chance. You will not be disappointed.

    I’d give this a 4.5 out 5 cups.

This will run you $12 plus shipping.
