Review: Ethiopia Guji Shakiso From Strange Coffee Co.

  • The Company
Strange Coffee Co. is a very small roasting company run by Russell Chisholm and Brian Babcock. These guys roast and brew specialty coffee through a very small roasting operation and are in the process of looking for a new, and bigger home. You can head to IndieGo and donate to help them reach that goal here.

    The Coffee

    Beans: Ethiopia Guji Shakiso Organic
    Roaster: Strange Coffee Co.

    Equipment/Brewing Method

    Brew Method: Clever Dripper
Grinder/Grind Size: Baratza Virtuoso Preciso – Dial 22
    Bean/Water Ratio: 19/350g 50 second brew time

    Notes:
The aroma is sweet and carries notes of cloves, cinnamon hints, and a slight vegetable play. The taste starts off with a sweet chocolate play and then moves to this spice like cloves and hints of cinnamon that reminds me of the moment you first open a spice cabinet.

    Verdict:
I think this is the first of the Guji coffee that has had this much spice and at this intensity. With Guji you tend to find more candied fruits, lemon, hints of chocolate, but this coffee wowed me at a City + roast with intense spice and sweet chocolate.

It was a very pleasant change to experience Ethiopian coffee under a different light.

    Score:
    88/100pts
