Review: Ethiopia Wollega Leka Wato From Four Barrel Coffee

I’ve never quite been able to bring myself to order from Four Barrel Coffee. Not because of anything negative but because I’ve never been able to decide what to order. They offer many delicious sounding coffees that it was very hard to pick the first coffee to try.The first coffee you try is the one that will either make or break the company when deciding to return to that company again. It’s all about the impression that the coffee leaves.
After much contemplating, and then even more contemplating, I landed on Ethiopia Wollega Leka Wato. This was probably the hardest decision I have ever made when it came to ordering coffee.
Ethiopia Wollega Leka Wato is said to carry:
Jasmine, orange oil and cane sugar introduce the candied oranges and coconut flakes in the cup. Excellent balance, brilliant, sparkling acidity and a clean, sweet finish.
I was so excited to dive into this one after reading the tasting notes that I may have expected this coffee to be extraordinary.
The first couple sips I felt like I was drinking hot, but slightly flavored water. The first thing that ran through my mind was that it was too weak. 35grams per 16oz of water didn’t seem weak, but I upped it anyways by 5grams and tried again.
The first cup was very very light and I had some trouble detecting notes, but once I readjusted the bean ratio I was given much better results.
The aroma carries a nice sweetness, tea like attributes, and some citrus.
As for the taste…
First, a pleasing acidity sprung up that left me with a tingling feeling on my tongue. After that, I could detect some sweetness, a floral characteristic that could be jasmine, orange hints, and some slight chocolate play that lingers into the aftertaste.
As the coffee cools the coffee gets a lot sweeter.
In the Hario I could detect the orange and jasmine notes a lot clearer and the coffee was even sweeter than it was in the French press. I feel like the Hario produced much better results with this coffee.
Overall, I found this coffee required a little more work to dial into, but overall I am still liking it very much. I definitely want to try more from Four Barrel Coffee.
I’d have to give this a 3.75 out of 5 cups.
You can grab yourself a 12oz bag of this for $14 plus shipping.
