Review: Fairview Estate, Kenya From Gorilla Coffee

  • Fairview Estate, Kenya

    The Coffee

    Beans: Fairview Estate, Kenya
    Roaster: Gorilla Coffee

    Equipment/Brewing Method

Brew Method: Aeropress / Coava DISK
Grinder/Grind Size: Baratza Virtuoso Preciso – Dial 24
    Bean/Water Ratio: 19/230g 1 minute brew time

    Notes:
Grind the beans to reveal a very pleasant, but delicate blueberry and white grape play. It smells so good you may just end up eating the beans themselves. All the way through brewing, and up until the finished product, white grapes flow up under your nose with a mild buttery sweetness. Hints of whiskey can be found as well.

Each sip is crisp following with a grape-like acidity. Soon after a whiskey play comes swooping in and takes over your tastebuds. The whiskey play is unexpected, odd, yet it soon becomes your favorite part of the cup. A slight sweetness lingers in the aftertaste with hints of dried cherries.

    Thoughts:
The idea of tasting whiskey in my coffee may have had me excited, but the first cup left me with an undecided feeling. It took me a few cups before I really started to enjoy this coffee as the whiskey play was a little more dominant than I expected it to be. I was expecting a hint of whiskey, not feeling like someone actually may have poured some in my cup when I wasn’t looking kind of feeling.

It may have taken me a few cups to really start to enjoy this Kenya, but within a few days it had become a coffee I grew to love.

This is also the first coffee from Kenya that I’ve had where it was not complex, or where it boasted big juicy fruity notes that we all know and love from Kenyan coffees. In the end, this was a straightforward, but very unique Kenya.

How many Kenyan coffees can you say you’ve had that tasted like whiskey? And I’m not talking hints of it either here.

This was my first introduction to Gorilla Coffee and I must say it was a great experience. I can’t thank them enough for kindly sending me a bag of this Kenya to try.

    Score:
    93/100pts
