Review: Guatemala SHB Huehuetenango Limonar From Buddy Brew

  • Buddy Brew Coffee

This coffees name might cause people to think you have issues if you attempt to say it out loud. Just kidding. Its name might be Guatemala SHB Huehuetenango Limonar, but most just call it Guatemala Huehue for short. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t worry. This one coffee you’ll want to read about.

Since the first time I experienced this coffee at Buddy Brew for a bloggers briefing, this coffee has been on my mind nonstop. In all seriousness it left me speechless and scratching my head.

It drove me crazy that I couldn’t find the words to describe it. So, I just had to get my hands on it.

    Guatemala Huehue Limonar is

A bright but sweet acidity features lemon, tangerine, and cherry notes at the start. The smooth, full body with chocolate notes on the finish leaves you wanting more….and more….

When the coffee arrived I realized I couldn’t dive right in. It was roasted two days earlier and still needed at least another two days rest.

Let me say that it was the hardest two days of my life trying not to touch the coffee, but in the end it was worth the wait.

As my routine always goes for coffee reviews, I first brewed it the French press. Sure, the coffee was good, but I felt something was missing.

I decided to try the Hario V60 out on the coffee to see if what I was missing would magically appear in a different brewing method.

HA! Like Abra Cadabra or something …

A change of brewing methods did the trick. The Hario V60 let this coffee shine bright.

The aroma was light with notes of lemon, cherries, and hints of chocolate. After sniffing the coffee a few more times I realized that the chocolate note would have the last say.

When I took the first sip, a bright but sweet acidity hit me. It was just enough to wake up my tongue and then moved to an explosion of lemon and cherries. After that a deep chocolate note coated my tongue which lingered and lingered.

It’s a very smooth full bodied coffee that you can’t turn your head from. Its good to every last drop and then some.

Overall, this coffee was an excellent coffee. I’ve never been disappointed by the coffees Buddy Brew offers. They strive for excellent beans and the outcome is amazing.

    I’m give this a 4.5 out of 5 cups.

Check out Buddy Brew and try some of this coffee. It will run you $12 for a 12oz bag.

    Hey,

Did you factor in you lost some of the components when brewing as press-pot?
I’m curious what was missing, the acidity perhaps? Or was it flavour components as well.

At first, I thought maybe it hadn’t rested long enough, but at the time it had already hit 4 days after being roasted. I decided to up the bean ratio a bit to see if it was under extracted, but I just kept getting a not so flavorful cup. It was like I was drinking hot water.

I have found that some light roasts just don’t do so well in the French press. I am not sure if it is just user error somewhere or if light roasts just honestly don’t do so well in the press.

That’s one of my favorite coffees from Buddy Brew. If it’s available when I stop in, it’s usually one of my first choices.
