Review: Papua New Guinea Goroka From Kuma Coffee

I hate getting a coffee where you can’t decipher what you are smelling and tasting, but at the same I love it because it keeps you guessing at what’s in the cup. The other coffee I received from Kuma Coffee, Papua New Guinea Goroka had me guessing…The other coffee I reviewed that I was sent, Nicaragua Mama Mina was a lighter coffee with notes of sweetness, flowers, and honey. Overall, I found this to be a pleasing coffee.
I was definitely excited to try this Papua New Guinea. I haven’t had much Papua New Guinea, but the few times I did have it I can’t recall it wowing me that much. I’m hoping this year I will find a crop that really shines.
Papua New Guinea Goroka is said to have notes of:
Starfruit, Kiwi, Cocoa.
Okay, simple enough.
The aroma is light and beautiful with notes of flowers, honey, and a pleasing sweetness. The beans, upon opening the bag carry a definite floral note. Digging deeper into the aroma, the beans start to smell more like roses. Overall, the aroma is a definite win in my book.
The taste was the part that left me guessing. The first sip greets you with a floral play, and right after an intense cocoa note that dominates your tongue and lingers into the aftertaste.
I notice hints of fruit, a light acidity, and sweetness, but I can’t define it anymore than that. As the coffee cools the floral play comes out more and the cocoa note fades into the background letting other notes in the coffee shine a little more. The floral play starts to taste a little more like roses.
I like the fact that as the coffee cools the cocoa note starts to calm down as it was quite intense at first.
This coffee has an overall medium body and a light acidity to it.
I’d give this a 3.75 out of 5 cups.
At $13.50 for a 12oz bag this is a great deal.
