Review: Santa’s Little Helper Blend From Doma Coffee

The CoffeeBeans: Santa’s Little Helper Blend
Roaster: Doma CoffeeEquipment/Brewing Method
Brew Method: Clever Dripper
Grinder/Grind Size: Baratza Virtuoso Preciso – Dial 24
Bean/Water Ratio: 22/350g 1:10sec steep / 1min dropNotes:
Aromas of chocolate, spice, and smoke flow from the cup. A heavy introduction until a fruit play comes tumbling out. Each sip starts with a spice play that opens the cup up to the chocolate and smokiness that follows. As the cup starts to cool I found hints of fruit and a sweet buttery mouthfeel.
Aromas of chocolate, clove and leather are followed by a rich, buttery mouthfeel. Perfectly balanced flavors of chocolate oreos, spice and toasted pannetone lead to a smooth, memorable finish. ~ Doma Coffee
Verdict:
I’m not a big fan of blends. I’m also not a fan of dark roasts, but Doma Coffee surprised me with Santa’s Little Helper. This coffee shows 4/6 on the roast scale posted underneath the description of this coffee. When the coffee arrived I opened the bag to find beans covered in a slight sheen of oil. This is a good indicator to run for your life, but I stood ground and prepared myself for whatever came.
Santa’s Little Helper carried a smokiness, but just a light smokiness. It was actually kind of pleasing which is something you may never hear me say again. Santa’s Little Helper did the best in the Clever Dripper as it kept the coffee balanced and let the coffee shine without being overpowering.
In some ways I wanted to hate this coffee for being a dark roast, but my tastebuds couldn’t help but to like it. This is a wonderful coffee for those chilly days that come your way. Let’s not forget the awesome letter pressed packaging worth keeping as well.
