Review: Sumatra Harimau Tiger From De La Paz

  • De La Paz Coffee

I’d never thought I’d ever see the day that a Sumatran coffee did not have the earthy, musty, dirtiness that most Sumatra’s seem to have. I’ve never been a fan of Sumatra. It’s one of those coffees that I just never liked. At least until now.

De La Paz had me with their Cherry Chapstick Espresso. That coffee opened my eyes to something great so it came as no surprise that I had high standards for this coffee.

    Sumatra Harimau Tiger is

a double picked semi-washed Typica mutant; more commonly know as a traditional Sumatra varietal. Unlike most traditional Sumatras, this coffee departs from the notoriously dirty mushroomy-pepper profile that is associated with Indonesian coffees. In the cup you can expect a nice strawberry forward acidity.

I was a little unsure at first. A Sumatra coffee departed from the dirty mushroomy-pepper profile? There had to be some traces of that earthy mustiness in there somewhere. Right?

I opened the bag only to be greeted with a strong fruitiness that turned out to be a definite strawberry note. I had to check the label just to reassure myself. I guess I wrote off Sumatran coffee a little too quick.

I brewed the first cup in the Hario V60 which gave me the most wonderful cup of coffee I’ve had all week.

The aroma carried a note I couldn’t begin to place. I know I had smelt it before but I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

Moving to the taste, this coffee carries a nice dryness. Each sip starts off with that dryness and then moves into a gush of strawberries and acidity. There is a earthy feel to the coffee that I can’t put into words. After each sip you are left with a clean aftertaste.

In the French press, this coffee tasted exactly the same. The French press carried the same dryness and gushes of strawberries and acidity. I was becoming more intrigued by this coffee by the second.

Hands down, this is the best Sumatran I have ever had. This coffee is delicious beyond words.

    I’m giving this a 4.5 out of 5 cups.

This coffee will run you $12 for a 12oz bag. I highly recommend you try this coffee.
