Review: Wicked Wolf From Raven’s Brew Coffee

  • Wicked Wolf Blend

    The Coffee

    Beans: Wicked Wolf Blend
    Roaster: Raven’s Brew Coffee

    Equipment/Brewing Method

    Brew Method: Hario V60
Grinder/Grind Size: Baratza Virtuoso Preciso – Dial 24
    Bean/Water Ratio: 32grams/16oz

    Notes:
Sharp aroma with spice and chocolate hinting that you’re in for a wake up call. The smooth body is backed by sweet chocolate. A spice comes out that really soaks into your tastebuds and wakes you up. Slight hints of smokiness in the background balancing the cup out.

Intense, vibrant flavor in a balanced cup with a superb finish. Superlative after-meal coffee with awesome applications as accompaniment to chocolate desserts! ~ Raven’s Brew Coffee

    Verdict:
I was bummed to find out that Raven’s Brew Coffee does not disclose the beans used in this blend or any blends they have on their coffee bags or the site which is an indicator of mine to run for the hills. However, the taste says otherwise as this coffee is quite freaking delicious. Having said that, it would be nice to be able to see the different regions of beans used that make up this delicious coffee.

I love how the coffee bags are very fun which is something you don’t see too often. I could see them not disclosing the beans used in the blends on the coffee bags, but at least have the information about the blends disclosed on the site. For me, this is a very important factor. I feel that if good quality beans were being used then there should be no reason why the information isn’t there.

Since I bought this coffee at my local Fresh Market, I can’t tell if they print a roast date for their coffees. This bag here came with a sticker that said “best by date of April 4, 2012″ so I am not sure about this, but since the best by date is over 6 months, I have a good feeling that this wasn’t at the store long. It also tastes pretty fresh too for a dark roast.

Despite my above complaints, the coffee really does have some nice perks to it. I for one love the packaging as this coffee in particular plays off of Red Riding Hood and the back of the bag gave me a good laugh. More importantly, the coffee is delicious for a dark roast. This coffee doesn’t carry the intense smokiness that you normally find with dark roasts which means this coffee was roasted with careful attention.

This coffee is rich and features sweet chocolate, intense spiciness, and carries just hints of smokiness to balance this coffee off. Wicked Wolf Blend would make a great after dinner let’s settle down coffee or a wonderful coffee to wake up to.

    Score:
Even though I had some complaints about the company not disclosing bean information and such, the coffee was still delicious nonetheless, and I would give it a

    Thanks for the awesome
review! While we understand your desire to know the origins of our blends, we
also must hold true to our practice of creating and branding these blends. Our coffee blend recipes have each been
carefully developed to a certain flavor profile. Occasionally, we must adjust
the components to maintain quality and consistency. That being said, we are more
than willing to give you an idea of the main origins of any given blend. The Wicked Wolf is composed of South America
and Central America varietals. Also, I can safely say that particular bag of Wicked
Wolf had been in the store no less than a week before you had it in your little
hands. Not only are our bags a wonder to behold, they are also of the highest
quality and our endless testing has proven their ultimate freshness! So grab
    another bag and enjoy!

Thanks! I figured it must have just hit the shelves because it tasted really fresh. Thank you for disclosing the regions of beans used.

Also, I hope the minor complain of the bean disclosure didn’t come off as me trying to bash your company. Just trying to express my thoughts without being negative.

I definitely will be trying more of your coffee in the future.

Wonderful read as I sat enjoying my cup of Wicked Wolf! I am a coffee snob that does not claim to be a coffee aficionado which means the background information on a bag matters little to me as long as the flavor hits the spot.  Just this weekend a person I was sharing this blend with noted the chocolate overtones and I will have to share the smoky idea with them as well.  Hope you get a chance to try their other blends!

Glad you liked the review. Yeah, there is just a tad of smokiness in the cup. I will have to try more of their coffee soon.
