Roasters And Bad Luck Joining Forces

  • It’s been a sad few weeks for me. My new roaster is having a few issues so it’s been sent back for repairs. I’ve been kind of bummed because I was so excited to test out my roaster, but at least I had the Behmor to keep my coffee roasting withdrawals down to a minimum. That is until the Behmor broke.

I knew this was coming. I’ve been having trouble with the fan for awhile now. It’s been acting up and I can’t figure out why. Now, as I wait for a replacement fan, I am becoming anxious to get the fan fixed and get back to roasting.

I wanted to roast so bad Saturday that I even attempted PAN roasting again. If you’ve been reading The Coffee Adventures since the beginning than you’ll remember my first time roasting using a PAN. I knew from the beginning it wasn’t my thing and it still isn’t. It’s kind of funny looking back on my first attempt at roasting and how badly I was. I am learning new things about roasting every day, but I feel pretty confident in what I’ve been able to accomplish in these last few months.

Here’s a little snapshot of my little set up from Saturday. I don’t know what I was thinking that I could use a hot plate to roast. I wanted to keep the smoke outside so I thought it was a good idea. The beans never reached the first crack. They just baked the whole time so they ended up getting thrown out. I did have fun though at least trying again. It just reminded me that I still can’t PAN roast. Well, you win some, you loose some.

QOTD: Have you tried roasting coffee at home? If so, what method have you found works best for you? And if you aren’t roasting, why not?

Not sure why I’m not roasting. At one point I really wanted to try it, but now I’m so busy I’m going to leave it to the people who are the experts and I’ll enjoy their hard work.

Hang in there. The roasters will get all fixed up then it’s off to the races again soon enough.

I haven’t started roasting yet because I don’t feel I”m ready. Enjoying experimenting with different brewing methods, as I add to my collection at home, is enough for now. Once I have the overall technicality down, then I”ll begin thinking about roasting. And I don’t think the landlord would be happy if I tried roasting. So I’m waiting to move.

Mike – I can understand that. I can’t wait until you do find the time. I definitely want to hear you coffee roasting adventures. ;)

  • Jamie

Jennifer – Thanks!! It had to happen at the worst time too. Out of coffee, and I was roasting for a few people. Oh well.

I hear you on the brew methods. I swear I wake up every morning and there is some new brew method out there that I must try. Right now, I just stick with my French Press. I love it too much to change.

You don’t think you could get away using a Behmor? Even outside it shouldn’t bother anyone. :)

I”m not sure about a Behmor. Even if I could, I have other goals to achieve first. trying to take one thing at a time and not get completely overwhelmed.

Hey Jamie – Hang in there. I get myself into situations similar and take matters into my own hands only to learn a great lesson I call experience. Hope all goes well with the repair on the new roaster & you get the needed repair done on the Behmor. Maybe you should get your ole back up of the popcorn popper.

  • Jamie

    @ Sandra –

Thanks. I am sure the roaster will be fine once the repairs are done. I almost brought out the popcorn popper too, but I decided to just wait because I have too many samples that I can’t afford to loose.
