Taking A Look Into Illy Issimo Canned Coffee Drinks

  • Latte Macchiato

Good or bad, I like to try just about everything. I’ve tried Starbucks coffee more times than I should, I’ve given Green Mountain Coffee a chance, and some of those other companies most people would tell you to avoid like the plague.

I’m here to give another company that you’ve seen every time you roam the coffee isle at the grocery store. I am talking about illy Coffee.

Recently I was contacted by illy asking me if I would like to try two of their new canned drinks, Mochaccino, and their Caffe No Sugar along with their original line. I contemplated this opportunity. I was going to say no, but I thought I’d check it out and give these guys a chance. That’s the whole part of a coffee adventure, right? Trying the good, bad, and the in-between.

After checking these drinks out I was actually surprised by some of them, and well, not so surprised by the others. Below are my results.

    Cappuccino:

    Aroma:
Very light light sweetness with hint of cocoa.

    Taste:
Each sip is very light. I don’t taste the coffee as much as I would have like to. There is a nice sweetness to it that it is not at all overpowering and also has hints of chocolate.

Overall, this drink doesn’t leave any weird aftertaste on your tongue, but does leave a bit of a cocoa taste. Although, the coffee flavor isn’t as strong as I would have liked I am still finding this quite enjoyable.

I’d give this one a 3.5 out of 5 cups.

    Latte Macchiato

    Aroma:
Very sweet like aroma with hints of burnt coffee.

    Taste:
Each sip is very sweet, a little too sweet for me. Drink has a very milky taste to it with a slight burnt coffee taste to it. This reminds me of the Starbucks Doubleshots, but a lot sweeter and not with as much of the burnt coffee taste.

Overall, I am not feeling this one too much. Between the lingering milk taste and the intense sweetness I probably wouldn’t drink this again. It isn’t however the worst drink I’ve had.

Having said that, I’d give this a 3.25 out of 5 cups.

    Caffe

    Aroma:
Smells like sweet cocoa. Very pleasing aroma.

    Taste:
The first sip came as a shock. The moment the espresso hit my tongue it felt like something stinging me. Each sip is sharp, intense with a bitter burnt flavor that is hard to swallow.

Overall, this is not a pleasing drink. It is harsh on the palate and not very flavorful.

Sorry, but I’d have to give this like a 1 out of 5 cups.

    Mochacinno with Domori Cocoa

    Aroma:
Smells like chocolate milk. Very light and sweet.

    Taste:
This tastes almost exactly like chocolate milk with hints of coffee. There is a kind of slight grittiness like you would have with a powdered chocolate mix. Each sip is sweet and chocolaty and leaves you with a slight milky chocolate aftertaste.

Overall, this is very drinkable and quite delicious. I would have liked to see more of the coffee brought out in this as that is what it is supposed to be… A coffee drink.

However, it is still delicious nonetheless, and I’d give this a 3.5 out of 5 cups.

    Caffe (No Sugar)

    Aroma:
Smells like what the Caffe tasted like. Honestly not looking forward to this one.

    Taste:
Tastes like burnt coffee, but without the harsh stinging that I felt with the Caffe. I am noticing this one is easier to drink, but it is still not what I call a good drink.

Overall, I’d give this a 2 out of 5 cups.

After reviewing illy’s two new drinks along with their original line I have come to the conclusion that they in fact do have some decent canned drinks on their hands, but they also have some not so good ones too. Their first drink off the new line, Caffe (No Sugar) needs a lot of help, but then again so does Caffe. They are both very unpleasant to drink.

The other drinks are all for the most part quite decent, but do need to have a little more coffee flavor which I am finding a lot of these canned drinks seem to lack. Are companies afraid to add more coffee in them? Hmm.

So now it all comes down to one question… Would I recommend illy to any of you guys or my friends?

Actually I would believe it or not, but only if you are looking at an emergency scenario where you need coffee fast, but then most of us will probably make time to grab a decent cup anyways.
