Thanks For The Memories…

  • Ritual Roasters

As a coffee reviewer it’s easy to adopt high standards. Coffee isn’t as good as it used to be, your tongue is getting better at picking up notes, and you start to become picky toward coffee until one day you get that coffee that makes you realize why you love it in the first place.

Ritual Roasters gave me this experience when I reviewed their Kenya Kiandu. Actually, this coffee gave me more than just a great experience. Kenya Kiandu opened my eyes back up to what I was missing as well as leaving me with the most memorable experience.

So, what was I missing? Simple. Enjoying my coffee beyond all possibilities.

    Kenya Kiandu is described as

sweet and complex with layered flavors of watermelon candy, nectarine juice, sweet pink grapefruit, and an assortment of stone fruits.

Upon opening the bag it became quite clear that this coffee was going to be great. A mouthwatering aroma flew out. It started with an intense brightness moving onto wine like notes and leaving me with an unforgettable sweetness. I didn’t want to move but I was so excited to dive in that I headed straight for the kitchen. And quickly at that.

Like all my coffee reviews I first brew in the French press, but instead I went for the Hario V60. I had a feeling that the Hario would give me the best cup of coffee and I didn’t want to start out with a bad cup.

When the coffee was done I sat down and relaxed allowing for the coffee to cool. As I waited I got myself into my mental coffee state. Yes, I do have a mental state when it comes to drinking/reviewing coffee.

After the coffee cooled a bit, I was ready.

At first sip, an explosion of flavors hits your tongue, and I mean explosion. It took a moment for my tongue to adjust but once it did it was clear what I was tasting. An intense juiciness coated my tongue, and then wine like notes appeared along with dried fruits and a lingering sweetness.

The juiciness in the cup started to taste more like an orange and the intense acidity the coffee brought was icing on a cake.

Each sip became better than the last and it also became harder to describe it was so good.

When I mentioned this coffee on Twitter, Brian at Dear Coffee, I Love You said he was at a cafe that served this coffee. Something tells me he couldn’t resist because before I knew it I had a reply from him waiting for me.

    His response:

ended up staying longer and had a cup of the Kiandu too. The aroma was ridiculous!

After reading his response it hit me. It was the perfect word to sum up this coffee. This coffee is seriously ridiculous.

Not one of the coffees I’ve reviewed here on The Coffee Adventures has received the score that I am about to give this coffee.

    I’m giving this a 4.75 out of 5 cups.

Ritual Roasters, your Kenya deserves this. Well done guys!

Outstanding review! Unfortunately, this coffee is now gone… Got word from Brandon today that what is left will be used for blending with an espresso. We pulled it off http://www.GoCoffeeGo.com Brandon stated – “Decided to hold on to our remaining supply of Kiandu to use as an espresso component, so we’re offering Marua, Kenya in its place.” We put that up today!
