The Hario V60: A Brew Method That Needs No Introduction
-
Yes, I said it. A brew method that needs no introduction even though I kind of am…The Hario V60’s popularity is like the French press. Sure, both brewing methods can brew more than a cup at a time, but can the French press give you a clean no sediment cup? The Hario V60 isn’t a new brewing method, but it has become very popular lately, and is also becoming the new preferred brew method of choice.
Move over French press. You’re getting put to the shelf.
I’m sure you are wondering why it’s so popular. I could tell you I have the answer to its popularity, but then I’d be lying.
…. But, if someone does have the answer let me know in the comments below.
What I can tell you is that it’s one brew method you’d want to have in your kitchen. If you are like me, one who likes to brew one cup at a time, then this is perfect for you.
I’ve known about the Hario V60 for quite some time now, but it wasn’t until I had some coffee from it while at a bloggers briefing at Buddy Brew that it opened my eyes wide, and haunted me until I finally bought one.
Design
The Hario V60’s design is straightforward. A single large hole to give you more control over the speed of extraction, and ribbed spirals to create more room for the coffee to expand. The large hole and ribbed spirals also allow for maximum flavor extraction.

You also have a few material options to chose from such as plastic, ceramic, glass, or porcelain.
Ease of use
So how does it work now?
Just stick a filter designed for the Hario in the cone, add grinds, and pour water… Easy as pie.
Overall, the Hario V60 is very easy to use, but there are some tricks, or a little science if you will to getting that perfect cup which I will be discussing in a later post.
Pros & Cons
The Hario V60 is great for that one cup at a time coffee fix. Drink a cup of coffee that you decide you don’t like? No problem. Now you don’t have to worry about pawning the other few cups off to someone else.
Another great thing is that there is no sediment left in your cup. The bad part? If you are a hardcore French press user, than no matter what brew method you use its probably etched into your brain not to drink the last few sips right? I know you are nodding your head as you read this.
Do you need more convincing? Okay, how about easy clean up? When you are done, just throw the filter away and rinse it out.
The Hario V60 will run you about $20 and the filters are between $4-10. Not a bad deal if you ask me. So, what are you waiting for? If you are a coffee connoisseur than this needs to be in your kitchen.
Remember, keep a look out for my Hario V60 experiments coming soon.
