What Factors Play A Role In Your Coffee Buying?

  • Whether we may realize it or not there’s always something that factors into the way we buy our coffee. Whether we were referred to a specific coffee or company from a friend, specific notes in the coffee, brand name, roast type, or price, there is always something behind our reasoning.

For me, I don’t have a specific way of buying coffee. If it sounds delicious, I will buy it. If someone has raved about the coffee, I’ll buy it. If it has a cool name, then there’s a good chance I am going to buy it.

I like to try to not limit myself when it comes to buying/trying coffee. I like to be open and explore all angles even if it may turn out to be a total fail.

So what about you? What factor plays the biggest part in your coffee buying?

First and foremost, I research the roaster to find out about their relationship with the farmers, business ethics, and quality. As some people only drink the finest wines and best food, I only drink the best quality coffee. This is my only splurge I have and it’s my little cup of luxury.

It’s good you are trying all different coffees, Jaime. This will really help you taste the difference between good and bad.

I’m a lot like you Jamie. I’m really into trying new and different coffees right now. I’ll buy a bag of anything from all over the spectrum, if it’s something that I haven’t tried before.

    Mike,

Yeah I just can’t get enough of coffee that I don’t want to limit myself to only certain factors. At least not right now.

Great question Jamie. I trust that it will be ok if I apply it to green coffees and not roasted coffees. I buy very little roasted coffee. I am on a very tight budget and cannot afford to buy all of the green beans I want/need to buy, and buy green beans as well. My strong preference is for my own roasted beans and that is where I spend nearly all of my money.
When I buy my greens I like to try as many diverse coffees as I can. I have a large inventory of coffees and one or two (Sidama and Colombian) that are staples in the inventory. I try to get something new and different each time I order. My guide in making my choice is generally the cupping notes that the sites from which I buy place on their websites.

    Neil,

Awesome comment. I didn’t think about green beans. I can never decide what to buy as far as green beans, but I do try and keep it on the cheaper side because I am still learning. I also lean toward the notes as well. If the notes sound really good then I will probably buy it and see what happens.
